FSSAI Central Licensing Application

FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) is a body which has been created under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 which lays down standards and rules for food articles and regulates their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.

FSSAI provides an opportunity to all Food Business Operators (FBO) to apply online for Registration or Licensing with the help of Online Registration/Licensing System. It is mandatory for any FBO to get FSSAI license before getting into any kind of food businesses.

These businesses include Manufacturing, Processing, Export, Import, Trading, Packing, Distribution, Storage, Transportation, Warehousing, Sales, Re-packing, Re-labeling, Wholesale, Retail, Hotel, Canteen, Dhaba, Restaurant, Club and Resorts and others alike.

Did You Know?

  • According to the FSS Act 2006, a distinction has been introduced between Registration and Licensing.
  • Registration is under State Food Safety Authority; however, Licensing for major Food Business Operator and for sectors which are prone to contamination remains under FSSAI Central Licensing Application System.
  • Eligible FBO like importers, 100% EoUs (Export Oriented Units), manufacturers, operators in Central Govt. agencies, airports, seaports, etc. need to take the central license from FSSAI.
  • Central Licensing Authority is responsible for providing a license to Food Business Operators that fall under this category.

10 Important Points for Eligibility

  1. Dairy units including milk chilling units equipped to handle or process more than 50 thousand litres of liquid milk/day or 2500 MT of milk solid per annum.
  2. Vegetable oil processing units and units producing vegetable oil by the process of solvent extraction and refineries including oil expeller unit having installed capacity more than 2 MT per day.
  3. All slaughterhouses equipped to slaughter more than 50 large animals or 150 or more small animals including sheep and goats or 1000 or more poultry birds per day.
  4. Meat processing units equipped to handle or process more than 500 kg of meat per day or 150 MT per annum.
  5. All food processing units other than mentioned under (i) to (iv) including re-labelers and re-packers having installed capacity more than 2 MT/day except grains, cereals, and pulses milling units.
  6. 100 % Export Oriented Units.
  7. All Importers importing food items for commercial use.
  8. All Food Business Operators manufacturing any article of Food which does not fall under any of the food categories prescribed under these regulations or deviates in any way from the prescribed specification for additives therein.
  9. Retail chains operating in three or more states.
  10. Food catering services in establishments and units under Central government Agencies like Railways, Air and airport, Seaport, Defence etc.
